Developed by digital literacy experts, the SIFT method is a quick four-step process to evaluate any post before you believe or share it:
-
S - Stop: When you feel a strong emotional reaction (anger, joy, or shock), stop. This is often a sign that the content was designed to manipulate you rather than inform you.
-
I - Investigate the source: Look at the profile or website. Is it a verified expert or a reputable news organization? Check the "About" section or look for a history of corrections.
-
F - Find better coverage: Don't rely on one post. Search for the topic elsewhere. If multiple reputable outlets are reporting the same thing, it is more likely to be true.
-
T - Trace claims to the original context: Misinformation often takes a real quote or video and strips away the surrounding context. Try to find the original video or the full transcript of a quote.
The "Online Disinhibition Effect" makes us say things behind a screen that we would never say to someone's face.
-
The Risk: This leads to dehumanization. We begin to see avatars as targets rather than people with complex lives and emotions.
-
The Deep Impact: Prioritizing empathy in digital interactions combats social polarization. By remembering the "human on the other side," we maintain the social fabric of the internet, turning it back into a tool for connection rather than a weapon for division.
In a digital space, you are stripped of 70-90% of your non-verbal communication (body language, eye contact, tone of voice).
-
The Risk: Without visual cues, a "short" email can be perceived as aggressive or dismissive. This leads to unnecessary conflict and "flame wars" where both parties defend positions they didn't actually take.
-
The Deep Impact: Maintaining professional etiquette builds Digital Trust. In a remote-first economy, your "textual presence" is your professional identity. High etiquette leads to faster career advancement and more resilient professional networks.
Digital etiquette involves understanding what is yours to share and what isn't (e.g., BCC’ing emails, not tagging people in photos without consent).
-
The Risk: "Oversharing" or leaking others' information creates a permanent digital footprint that can never be fully erased.
-
The Deep Impact: Practicing strict privacy etiquette preserves psychological safety. When people feel their data and private lives are respected, they engage more authentically. Conversely, a lack of privacy etiquette leads to a "surveillance culture" that stifles creativity and intimacy.
